does inadvertency take precedence? ( 03:49:30 ThuMay 22 2003 )

Country: USA

Hi all,
Can LHO accept an inadvertent insufficient call? If it is not accepted, does the inadvertent section or insufficient section apply?

Thanks,
Dan

If a player inadvertently makes a call he did not intend then he may change it {subject to being in time}. It matters not whether it is insufficient or not.

So if the player bids 1 when he means to bid 3 then it may be changed: it may not be accepted: and there are no UI problems because the player meant all along to bid 3. If he did not intend to bid 3 then his 1 was not inadvertent and may not be changed.

Of course he may only change it to the call he intended. For example if the 1 was out of turn he may change it to 3 if he can convince the TD he meant to bid 3, but it will now be treated as 3 out of turn.

Hi,
Thanks for the answer.

I'm frustrated in general with the presentation of the Laws because this is one of several examples where incomplete explanation makes two laws seem to overlap for precedence (inadvertency and insufficient bid).

Thank god for supplementary texts, but I think the Laws should be written much more readably and in the style of "if this happens, then do this", like the Larry Harris director's aid.

Dan
