Got John

by David Yehudah, Bellflower, CA, USA

--------------

This evening I went out onto the patio and lit up a cigar, took a puff, then left it in the ashtray to enjoy later. Just as I came back in the back door, John came in the front. We gave each other a small 'hello' and went back out on the patio.

John had stopped at a bar on the way home and had a few drinks. Quite a few, apparently. He couldn't have hit the floor with his hat. We sat down on the patio and leaned back for a visit.

I like to smoke while talking, so I reached over and picked up the cigar and put it in my mouth. That's when I noticed it was still lit. John reached in his pocket for a lighter, but I held up my open right hand and waved him off. With a flourish I closed my right hand into a fist, thumb up, and tucked my thumb down between my fingers, then flicked my thumb as if operating a cigarette lighter and thrust the end of the cigar out of sight down inside my fist. I took a deep breath and exhaled a large puff of smoke from the cigar even as I showed him my empty hands.

I thought his eyes were going to pop out of his head! He grabbed my hand and looked it over thoroughly, then checked all around us, all the while making kind of a funny noise back down in his throat.

He still hasn't figured it out. I can't wait to hear what he tells Patty when she gets home.
