Mittens and Wrestle-Kitty

by Michael, Louisville, KY, USA

-----

Our first cat was Mittens, a DSH silver tabbie. My 6 yr old daughter found him when he was 6 months old, a scrawny, half starved worm infested, rather pathetic creature with enormous ears and long skinny legs. He was a peculiar looking kitten. I worked during the day and went to school at night, so my lady told my daughter we could keep the cat if I said it was okay. My daughter was very happy, she knew we were going to keep the cat. (Yes, I am a big, tough-looking guy, but I am really a softy when it comes to kids and kittens.)

After visiting the vet and making sure Mittens was healthy, we set out to accumulate all the necessities for a kitten (litter pan, food, etc.) Mittens was spending most of his days eating, sleeping, and exploring our apartment. He loved my daughters room, as it was filled with wonderful playthings. One toy, a small pound purrie (a yellow stuffed kitten) was his particular favorite.he would drag that kitten around tha apartment, wrestle with it, and sleep with it. That's why we named it Wrestle-Kitty. An artist friend even painted a t-shirt of Mittens and Wrestle-Kitty for my daughter's 7th birthday.

One day, my sister (the beast) insisted on giving us a small yellow kitten. We tentatively named it TC (Too Cute) and introduced him to Mittens. We were very nervous because by this time, Mittens was full grown and we were afraid that he would hurt TC. Boy were we wrong!

Mittens freaked out. (I think he thought that Wrestle-Kitty suddenly came to life.) He hissed, screamed, and ran from TC. TC, being a kitten, thought this was a wonderful game, and chased Mittens. Mittens was horrified. (It actually looked as if he were going to have a heart-attack.) We finally found Mittens perched on the seat of the toilet, with TC circling the toilet trying to get Mittens to come and play. Every once in a while, Mittens would gather enough courage to smack TC on top of the head. before returning to the safety of his lair.

We decided that Mittens did not want a live Wrestle Kitty, so we gave TC back to my sister. It was several days before Mittens would play with Wrestle-Kitty. He kept thinking that WK would spring back to life and chase him around the apartment. (Later we did get another kitten, Pete, then Zeke and Zuzu, so I am fairly certain that it was TC's resemblance to WK that had Mittens so freaked.)
