Frank, the Alarm Clock

by Marina Kurten, Helsinki, Finland

-----

This is something I'm sure every catperson recognizes; what cats do in the morning when they want their breakfast. Well, they wake you, of course, but how?

At our home, it's Frank who does the dirty work. Nikki sits and watches somewhere, and it's only when I finally get up that she comes running and purring for her share.

Frank is all the more adamant. When he decides it's time for me to wake up, around five am, he first goes to his litter box, where he scratches around for ages. Then he goes to a mirror and drags his claws over it for a while - screeeech! Screech, screech, screeeech!

At this point, I usually yell something at him. He ponders my unkind words for a while, then he jumps up in the bed and comes to kiss me. His purring vibrates the bed. If I don't lift my face for him to kiss, he sticks a paw under my chin, claws out of course, and makes me. Then he goes down to my feet and dig them out from under the covers, claws out of course. Then he comes digging somewhere around the middle of me, claws out... well, you get the picture.

All this time, I've been whimpering to him, "No Frank, please! Just let me sleep a little bit more! Oh no, Frank, not my toes!" Naturally, Frank ignores it all. His purring drowns every other sound, anyway. He jumps down on the floor and selects a table or shelf where there are interesting things to push around and - oops! - drop to the floor. Each time I yell at him, he comes back into the bed, purring his head off, doing all the kissing and digging described above over again.

When I finally take the hint and sit up in bed, he comes trampling all over my lap and kissing me as if he's found a long-lost friend, or as if I've arisen from the dead (maybe he believes he can accomplish this miracle each and every morning). Now, when she's in no danger of getting yelled at, Nikki also comes out of the corner where she's been watching it all.
