Uninvited Guests

by Sheenah Large, London, England UK

Most evenings, my neighbour puts food out for the fox.. Usually he dines alone. However, one evening just after settling down to gnaw on the remains of a leg of lamb he got the distinct feeling that someone was attempting to join him at dinner. He raised his head from his meal and looked carefully around. His feeling had been right. To his left, just a few feet away from where he lay there sat a small tabby and white cat To his right, emerging from bushes several yards away was a large tabby and white cat. He was walking purposefully towards the fox. The fox looked worried; he couldn't remember having invited any guests to dinner. He wondered if there would be enough food for three to eat and glanced down at his bone. Definitely not. While he was thinking what to do next, the two cats manoeuvred themselves into a position where the fox could see them both at the same time and sat quietly awaiting his next move. The fox stared at them, willing them to go away, and tightened his grip on his bone. The cats stared back and stayed put. The fox, who was by now feeling quite peckish, took a quick bite of his dinner. As he did so, the large tabby cat took a small step towards him. Immediately, the fox raised his head and, with his mouth still full, glared at the cat. The cat immediately retreated. Again, the fox returned to his meal. Several times the cats tried to join him and each time he repelled them with his steely eye. Eventually, they decided to go in search of a more congenial host and the fox finished his meal in peace. It tasted all the sweeter for having been the subject of such envy.
