Problem Child

by Pam Shirk, North Carolina, USA

--------------

I was awakened this morning by the ring of the door bell. Rob had locked himself out. As I limped through the living room to let him in, I looked over at my rocking chair. PC was stretched out on his back, belly shining in the light paws stretched out to all four sides and tail elegantly draped over the side. He looked like he'd been staked on the sand. Amused, I looked around for the other cats. They were all facing each other, meatloaf position, intent on intercat communication. I got the feeling that a decision had been reached.

I'd almost dozed back off when a herd of cats came thundering into my bedroom. PC was in the lead with Merlin right behind him. PC leaped for the bed. He actually landed on his feet this time, well, two of his feet. Have you ever watched the movie "George Of The Jungle?" There's this scene where a large male lion winces as he watches George slam into a tree. Merlin winced exactly like that lion.

PC sat down on the ground and began to clean his paw, he'd meant to land like that. Merlin stepped forward, slapped PC, and then proceeded to leap on the bed, with plenty of clearance. He leaped back down and then back up again. PC tried to leap up to join Merlin. He landed on one foot this time. Merlin was exasperated. He leaped back down and smacked PC again. He leaped back on the bed and then back down. PC tried again. This time he landed on three feet. Merlin let him alone.

PC ran up to my hair and started pulling it. Merlin spanked him. PC drank out of my water glass. Merlin watched him quietly until PC got sloppy and splashed some on my face. Merlin stepped forward. PC retreated. Both cats left the room.

A little bit later I was awakened by some horrible cat dying noises coming from the living room. I rushed in to find Tanada and QC holding PC down between them, furiously cleaning EVERY inch of his body. PC was struggling, but the girls weren't letting him loose until they were satisfied that he was clean. I went back to bed.

A bit ago, Berfert was laying on the window nest and PC came barreling in with a toy in his mouth. Berfert watched him intently until PC left the room. He then lay back down and went back to sleep. I think I know what's going on. The cats have decided that we aren't going to get rid of PC, and have decided to train the runt.
