West led the 7 - David Kent hopped up with the K and ruffed the A. He led the
4 and suddenly found himself in dummy with the singleton
6! He didn't need the dummy entry, but he needed the trick! That little diamond was the difference between making and going down one.
Doug Heron says that when the 6 won the trick, East merely shrugged his shoulders with complete equanamity as if this sort of thing befell him every day.
At the other table, South opened 1, and North splintered over the diamond overcall. Spades were never found, so declarer played in 4
, just making - 6 IMPs to David and Doug.
