Thalia has always loved sleeping on our bed. However, now she is an old lady, she finds jumping up onto it impossible and has to try instead to climb onto it. Standing on her hind legs, she reaches up and grasps the duvet cover with her front claws, starts hauling her body up then, as the cover shifts under her weight towards the bed's edge, slowly slithers back to the ground
Unable to bear this sad spectacle and Thalia's embarrassment, my DH and I set about trying to find a way to help her achieve her goal. We found the perfect solution in the form of a hexagonal, bamboo stool. When placed at the bottom of the bed, it was the just the right height for her to be able to step up on to and from it to step up on to the bed. We waited eagerly for her try it out.
When Thalia came in to go to bed, she sniffed one leg of the stool then walked around the stool inspecting it. So far so good, we thought. Then, she sat down beside it and sniffed its seat. We began to get excited. She was definitely thinking about using it. While Thalia considered her next move, we waited with baited breath.
After only a few seconds of indecision, she stood on her hind legs, reached up and............ grasped the duvet cover with her front claws, started hauling her body up then, as the cover shifted under her weight.towards the bed's edge, slowly slithered back to the ground.
PS: With a little help from us, Thalia soon learnt what the stool was for and now happily uses it every time she wants to get on to our bed. Having noted her benefiting, Jason and Sylvia have, not surprisingly, been quick to take the same advantage.
