The Answering Machine

by Pam Shirk, North Carolina, USA

--------------

I'm not a very outgoing person, and don't know a lot of locals, so answering machine messages are not very common. However, I knew there were messages on the machine today as soon as I walked in the front door.

All three cats were waiting for me. I walked in and QC walked up and put her front feet on my waist and gazed into my face. Berfert stropped my ankles and looked up at me. Tanada did a sort of dance and dashed into the bedroom where the machine is, with QC in hot pursuit. Berfert stood in front of me with his tail by my hand as if to say "Here's my tail, what's your hurry?"

I grabbed his tail and followed him down the hall to my room. There Tanada was standing on my computer monitor staring at the answering machine. QC was sitting in her nesty doing the same. There were two messages on the machine. Tanada heard me come in and started alternating looking at the machine with looking to see if I was going to do anything about the contraption that talked to her. When I pushed the play button she sighed with satisfaction and listened to one of Amanda's teachers telling me that Mandy needed to remember to bring some materials to school. The other message was a friend arranging to visit tomorrow. All three cats know her voice and looked around when they heard her talk.

I had a friend baby-sit QC once and she played a message I'd left on her machine for QC. She said that the Coochie went wild, tried to take the phone out of her hand, attacked the machine and licked it and rubbed against it. I think the cat is really strange, but who can turn down that kind of affection? Does anyone else have cats that love the answering machine, or go nuts when they hear their slaves' voices from a machine?
