Working For Food

by Pam Shirk, North Carolina, USA

One of Mandy's jobs is to keep the cats' self feeder full and their water dispenser filled with fresh water. The water is supposed to be done daily and the feeder usually lasts the chew crew about a week. Needless to say, sometimes she forgets.

Yesterday morning, Berfert and Merlin came in to wake me up at an early hour. This is not unusual, but it did seem odd that Berfert wasn't interested in just soulfully looking up my nose and singing his little kitty heart out. I walked into the kitchen as dictated by my little furry escorts and found that the food holder was nearly out. There was less than a cup of food in it. I showed Berfert the fridge (an integeral part of our early morning routine) and told Mandy that the feeder needed a re-fill.

This morning I woke up and found out that Mandy had not fed the cats. Berfert had drug all his "nakies" in and arranged them in a neat pile beside my bed. Berfert's nakies are old knee-hi panty hose that he has protected me from by either killing them after I've taken them off, or liberating them from the trash can. I put a knot in them so that I can tell the difference between the wearable and those I let Berfert have. There were over a dozen "nakies" in his pile and not all of them had been donated to Berfert. He'd been hoarding them somewhere and had brought them out to let me know that he protects me and the least I can do in return is to make sure he gets his food as promised.

Needless to say, Mandy was woke up and told to take care of the cats' food. They're now happy and no "nakies" are in evidence.
