New Babies!!

by Jenniffer

--------------

Peaches has been terrified of the guinea pig since the day she saw it. (So the guinea pig is 1/3 her size - no one said she was an intelligent kitty!) We've never had a problem with her bothering the 'rodent.' Which is good, 'cause the guinea pig was pregnant.

Last night, we got 2 adorable little baby guinea pigs. Now, I'm not sure how many people have seen a newborn guinea pig out there, but they are NOT what you would expect. Instead of the bald, pink little maggot-looking babies of most rodents, guinea pigs come complete with fur, their eyes open, and start scurrying around within a few minutes. They're the size of a full-grown hamster, and it's recommended that you start to handle them as soon as they're dry - the mother won't reject them like some animals if you do this.

This was all very interesting to Peaches. She really wanted to 'investigate' these small creatures that look so much like a mouse or hamster (even though I have yet to see her catch anything live in the many years of acquaintance.) What she didn't count on, however, was the mama. Pepper Ann has never bitten in the entire time we've had her, but when her babies seemed to be in danger of a big Peach Kitty, that motherly instinct took over. Peaches reached out a paw to bat at the smallest pig, and received a nip on the nose before she knew what was happening. She didn't bite hard - just enough to let the big dumb cat know that it was not acceptable. You'd think that the cat was run over by a truck, by the way she screeched, though! It didn't draw blood, nor can you see any marks anywhere, but Peaches cried like a baby for about an hour and a half!

Daddy made her feel better by petting her and comforting her for almost another hour before going to bed. She was even given her very own down pillow to sleep on without having to steal it...! Poor baby!
